An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Because my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
