A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.

- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
