The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
