"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple famous supporters have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their visuals often feature them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.

But the sister act will forever be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
